Farewell to Kira Stoll, Chief Sustainability & Carbon Solutions Officer

August 1, 2024

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing today with bittersweet news. Kira Stoll, UC Berkeley’s Chief Sustainability & Carbon Solutions Officer and Director of the Office of Sustainability will be leaving us and taking on a new role as the inaugural Chief Sustainability Officer and Executive Director at UC San Francisco. Kira’s last day at Berkeley will be on August 13, 2024.

Kira’s Berkeley career began in 2001 as the campus transportation planner and since a progressive series of positions brought her to her current role in 2017. Under Kira’s stewardship, she led the campus’ Sustainability Plan with significant accomplishments to integrate sustainability practices onto campus operations. This includes carbon emission reductions and zero waste along with renewable energy, resource saving and stewardship, greening the built environs, and inspiring resilient and inclusive institutional change. In 2023, Kira was instrumental in Berkeley being ranked first out of 700 global institutions for overall impact and received perfect scores on its environmental and social impact rankings. And notably, Kira’s leadership in the Berkeley Clean Energy Campus, an initiative that has advanced to design, will reduce campus building energy carbon emissions by 85% when complete. This is just a few of the many recognized accomplishments under Kira’s directorship.

Kira and I will be working on plans for her replacement and I will be reaching out to the campus community to seek perspectives on the role.  To ensure continuity of responsibilities and projects the Office of Sustainability will transition to Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities Services, Sally McGarrahan. Kira and I look forward to enhancing further collaboration between our two campuses. I will ask that you cascade this announcement within your divisions as appropriate.

Please join me in wishing Kira the best of luck in this new chapter of her professional career and we profoundly thank her for her service to Berkeley.

Kind regards,

Marc Fisher
