5th Annual Sustainability Summit

This year's Annual Sustainability Summit is larger than ever before. It will be on Monday, April 21st located in Pauley Ballroom from 8am-1:30pm. This year's summit will recognize staff, faculty, and students addressing sustainability issues on campus and provide information at breakout sessions about various related issues and personal choices we can make as individuals and a campus community to help reduce our environmental footprint.

Like last year, the summit will be kicked off with a poster session from 8am-9am. Various sustainability related groups will have an opportunity to share what they have been doing this past year with attendees. Coffee and tea will be provided throughout this hour.

The traditional ceremony will be from 9am-10am, with a video taped message from Chancellor Birgeneau, short presentations by CACS interns, and emceed by the first Sustainability Director at Berkeley, Lisa McNeilly. There will also be a slide show of sustainability related photographs.

Ten break out sessions, five each hour from 10am-11am and 11am-noon will take place throughout rooms in the MLK student union and in Eshelman Library. These will vary in topics from waste to climate change to meeting the Sustainability Director, but each one will focus on empowering individuals to make small changes to be more sustainable.

Lunch will be from noon to 1:30pm. Come hear keynote Michel Gelobter talk about social justice over organic and locally grown food catered by Cafe de la Paz. The Sustainability Awards will also be announced at this time.

Be sure to stop by MLK to be a part of this campus wide event. Lunch is the only portion of the summit that needs an RSVP, please go here to do so.

Summit 2005

If you are having troubles viewing the photo gallery, try downloading the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player.

In 2005, the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Sustainability (CACS) held its second annual Sustainability Summit. The main focus of the day was the official presentation of Cal's first Campus Sustainability Assessment to Chancellor Robert Birgeneau. CACS and the Chancellor also presented the 2005 Green Fund Grants and Campus Sustainability Awards.

"It's the first time we have ever done a comprehensive snapshot of the whole campus at same time," says Recycling Coordinator Lisa Bauer. "We were pleasantly surprised at some of the as-yet-untold success stories." The survey also identifies "easy, difficult, and nigh-unto-impossible" sustainability "opportunities," says Bauer. "I hope they will become a template for what we can do in the next few years to start moving the campus toward sustainability."

Summit 2004

The first UC Berkeley Sustainability Summit

"To survey the landscape and get a vantage point on sustainability, and to chart the paths ahead and define where we want to go next."

About Sustainability Summits

CACS first met in October 2003, and within a year, hosted the first annual UC Berkeley Sustainability Summit where it secured funding to conduct a campus sustainability assessment and established the Chancellor's Green Campus Fund (CGCF), which awards annually Green Fund Grants. The following October, CACS kicked off the Berkeley Environmental Alumni Network (BEAN).

Since 2004, CACS has hosted a UC Berkeley Sustainability Summit every April. These events serve to gather the campus' sustainability community - to honor achievements with Sustainability Awards, to give general community members the chance to green their campus with Green Fund Grants, to highlight major initiatives, and above all to reconnect and share.
