Wooden Furniture Reuse - YaYa California

Background: Young Aspirations, Young Artists California is an innovative new non-profit enterprise working with homeless and low income youth, ages 16 to 25, providing jobs painting art on recycled furniture to sell, as well as getting youth involved in public art projects and teaching children art in elementary after-school programs.
Job Description: YaYa California seeks an intern to work with our organization for 16-18 weeks in fall/winter/spring 2007/08 establishing a link with UC Berkeley in order to receive donations of furniture from students leaving campus each spring as part of the campus' efforts to recycle diverse items left by students. The student will be involved in setting up a system so that our organization can effectively pick up furniture donations, working in conjunction with the other agency recycling partners, the University, fraternities and sororities, apartment buildings, etc.
Requirements:
- Excellent program organizer/planner with strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to carry out simple, detailed research
- Ability to track and provide attention to detail
- Ability to work independently, take initiative
- Ability to create a timeline and follow a project through to completion
- Existing campus leadership contacts a plus

Biodiesel Education Intern

Background: Biodiesel is America's fastest growing alternative fuel. The BioFuel Oasis is a small worker-owned cooperative business that sells biodiesel at the pump in West Berkeley. We currently teach monthly fuel filter changing workshops, give occasional school group tours, and in February taught a 5 day intensive on starting your own biodiesel station.
Job Description: We are seeking a self-motivated student to help us expand our biodiesel classes and education by working closely with us to do some or all of the following:- Spend the first month getting to know our business and the basics of biodiesel
- Research the current class market, survey our customers for class ideas, and look for organizations we could partner with to teach classes
- Research local community colleges at which we could guest lecture and/or teach full classes
- Write a detailed business plan for the expanded education program
- Research grants to support the classes
- Write class curriculum, create a marketing plan, and make promotional materials
Payscale: $11/hr, February 2008-April 2008

Berkeley Unified School District's Experiential Garden and Cooking-based Education Program

About the program: Through weekly school garden and cooking classes at the k-12 grade levels, the Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) Garden and Cooking Network Program teaches students about where their food comes from, the importance of local sustainable food systems and the value of adopting healthy eating and physical activity patterns as part of a healthy lifestyle. Our vision is to teach every child to seek, grow, prepare and eat nourishing, delicious and sustainably grown food and to empower students to make choices that have a positive influence on their personal health, family, community and surrounding environment.
Job Description: Program Interns learn what it takes to run a district-wide nutrition education program by gaining first-hand experience with curriculum development, program administration, and a parent nutrition program. Interns will also have the opportunity to support in facilitation of hands-on garden and cooking classes. Interns are supervised by Nutrition Network Program staff.
Qualifications: We are looking for candidates with experience and/or interest in one or more of the following areas: nutrition education, experiential learning, organic gardening, food systems, and healthy cooking. Ability to work well with children, good communication skills and willingness to learn more about our program are a must. The ideal intern has strong oral and written communications skills, and is a quick learner who is able to work independently and solve problems creatively. Program Interns should be comfortable with the Internet, MS Word and Excel.
Compensation: $10/hr

Climate Action Intern
Positions: 1
Background: The Ecology Center has been working to help local residents, governments, agencies, organizations, and businesses reduce their environmental impacts for nearly 40 years. We are now finding that we must reorient and reorganize our educational efforts so that they are framed with a focus on climate change. This internship will help us integrate our existing programs with other carbon-reduction projects such as the Low Carbon Diet, the City of Berkeley’s Measure G efforts, and the UC Climate Action Plan. We offer many programs and services that help residents to reduce their environmental impacts (from Berkeley’s curbside recycling pickup to the farmers’ markets and more), as well as offer classes and events in our Environmental Resource Center and at the EcoHouse, our demonstration site. We are currently developing a Local Carbon Offset website. We have much to offer the community and this internship will help us provide more effective environmental service.
Job Description: The Ecology Center is seeking a UC Berkeley graduate student, or highly skilled UC Berkeley undergraduate to help integrate our educational activities with the City of Berkeley and UC Climate Action Plans. Specifically, the intern will help us produce:
- Educational Content for our Carbon Offset Website
- Fact sheets and Educational Materials
- A Low Carbon Diet Blog
- Materials for Use in the Low Carbon Diet Effort
- Documentation and Framing of Ecology Center Carbon Reduction Services
- Draft Climate Action Education Plan
- Organize events and classes
- Draft Language for Future Fundraising Efforts
Requirements:The Intern must possess both analytical and people skills and will help us review the service base, our classes and events, materials and other resources. The intern will work on ways to integrate the language, framing, and concrete programmatic connections to best serve the community. Must be able to perform research, writing, content development for our website, organize and participate in events, and prepare the organization for fundraising efforts to continue this work upon their departure. Experience working in a collaborative community setting is a plus.
Payscale: Internship will span the Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 semester; 10 to 20 hours per week for a total of approximately 350 hours, and will pay $10 -$15 per hour depending on experience.
