Internships 2005-06

CACS Internships: 9 Positions Available 2005-2006

Internships are in six main areas:
1. Energy Education
2. Environmentally Preferable Purchasing
3. Green Restaurant Certification
4. Outreach and Communications
5. Website Maintenance and Assessment Upkeep
6. Administrative Support

Academic credit may be possible.

1. Energy Education Interns (4 positions)

This educational effort will promote energy conservation on the Berkeley campus. Students will gather energy usage data and educate staff, faculty and students about their energy consumption habits. This position can begin immediately and will end with the spring 2006 semester. Weekly schedules are flexible (10-12 hours per week). Training will be provided. Salary: $12 per hour.

The interns will gather energy usage data; Enter data into a database; create and deliver energy consumption presentations, assist in the development of a marketing plan; analyze target audiences and education campaign results.

Preferred Skills: Desktop publishing, graphic design, web publishing skills; Public speaking and excellent writing skills; Comfortable working in a team-oriented environment; Some statistics, marketing, or sociology training is a plus.

2. Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Intern (1)

5-10 Hours/week; 35 weeks, until end of Spring Semester 2006; Starts immediately, $10.00-10.50/hour

Requirements: Upper division undergrad or graduate student; Currently enrolled at UC Berkeley. Skills and Abilities: Excellent writing, speaking, computer and web skills; Ability to work independently; Self starter; Background or previous work or study in environmental area; Interest in Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) preferred.

Intern would coordinate/assist in the following areas:
Supplier management program, which would include developing environmental standards for campus suppliers.
Training for campus buyers on EPP, with a possible EPP focused vendor fair. Office products may be the first subject area for fair.
A green portal/presence on either BLU or the procurement website.
Previously developed green website component needs to be checked for accuracy/relevance.
Engage in the UC Office of the President (UCOP) Strategic Sourcing efforts for the system, and incorporate EPP as possible. Coordinate with UC Santa Barbara.
Develop and put forward a campus EPP policy.

3. Green Restaurant Certification Intern- City of Berkeley (1)

Work with the City of Berkeley Office of Sustainability and the Berkeley Downtown Business Association on a program to do Outreach and green-Certify downtown Berkeley restaurants, in support of the community's vision of making Berkeley home to the "Greenest Hospitality Sector."

Intern/s will be trained for 2-3 hours by each participating agency in services available for reducing energy and water use, solid waste, toxics and improving storm water management. The intern will contact and meet with preselected restaurants and work with selected establishments on the certification process. At the conclusion of the project the interns will assist with an evaluation report, and provide recommendations and assessment of the program. What methods worked well? What could be improved for the future?

4. Outreach and Communication Intern (1)

Work with the staff and committee members of the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Sustainability (CACS) to publicize and facilitate the educational goals of the CACS. -- Outreach, public relations, event planning and management. Organize publicity and events, including the annual Sustainability Summit in April. Record meeting proceedings, assist with a variety of outreach activities geared to all facets of the campus community.

Payscale: $12/hr; 5/week for 15 weeks. Workload will be higher in April leading up to the summit.

Intern would coordinate/assist in the following areas:
- Outreach and coordination for Sustainability Awards
- Outreach and coordination for Sustainability Summit
- Event planning and management for Summit
- Assist with public relations for CACS
- Assist with CACS website web content



5. Sustainability Assessment and Website Administration Intern (1)

Intern will work with CACS to maintain the http://sustainability.berkeley.edu site, especially in connection with the Outreach Subcommittee. This involves incorporating text received in emails into the CACS website, adjusting formatting and adding links where appropriate. The application Dreamweaver will be used, and instruction will be provided if necessary. Initially the site will be rebuilt with existing new templates and after that, new pages will be created. The internship could be expanded to include building pages for displaying campus electricity and water consumption data, maintaining a list of sustainability- related courses, and other items.

Assessment documentation synchronization involves converting the QUARK version of the 2005 Sustainability Assessment to InDesgin format and correcting the text of the document to be identical to pdf version posted on the website.

6. Administrative Support Intern (1)

Support and work with the staff and committee members of the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Sustainability (CACS) to organize meetings, workshops and coordinate events. Record meeting proceedings, assist with a variety of follow-up and outreach activities geared to all facets of the campus community. Track the Committee' initiatives and report on their progress.

About Sustainability Internships

Starting during the 2005-06 academic year, CACS has offered Student Sustainability Internships, and through these paid positions, Berkeley students have access to a whole new field of applied learning.

Campus members with sustainability projects in need of helping hands can apply for internship funding, usually during the summer break, and with the return of undergraduates in the Fall, the positions are filled.
