CalCAP History
The initiative was kicked off in early 2005 by an undergraduate student Brooke Owyang, Professor Dan Kammen, Eli Yewdall, and Scott Zimmermann, with support from Tom Kelly at KyotoUSA. We put together a petition in which we gathered support from students, faculty, and administrators from across the campus calling for us to take responsibility for our GHG emissions. Vice Provost Cathy Koshland then convened the CalCAP Steering Committee in early 2006, bringing together a broad constituency from across campus to provide recommendations to the Chancellor. The Steering Committee consists of 25 students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
In April 2006, the Chancellor announced that the campus would strive to achieve Governor Schwarzenegger’s state targets as a minimum, and he called for a feasibility study to identify mitigation opportunities and to determine financial feasibility of aggressive targets. The campus hired Fahmida Ahmed as CalCAP Project Manager in October 2006 to conduct the feasibility study. The team includes graduate student researcher Scott Zimmermann and undergraduate intern Dana Riley.
Since its inception, CalCAP continues to gain momentum at Cal as a research and implementation engine on sustainability and climate change issues on campus. The campus is currently in the planning stages for establishing a new Office of Sustainability under the leadership of Vice Chancellor of Administration Nathan Brostrom, and CalCAP will likely be integrated into that organization.
