Campus Travelers Giving Back

Calculate your air travel carbon footprint and support climate action at UC Berkeley

UC Berkeley faculty, students, staff and alumni are actively solving some of the planet's most pressing challenges. However, much of this work involves traveling around the world — and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.

UC Berkeley’s Air Travel Calculator helps members of the campus community estimate the greenhouse gas emissions related to their air travel and make up for this impact through a charitable donation to the UC Berkeley Climate Action Fund. This fund supports critical projects to help the campus meet its ambitious commitment to dramatically reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2007, UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau committed the campus to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2014. The University’s climate action planning identifies a range of mitigation strategies for campus operations, including projects designed to change individual and departmental behaviors. Many exceptional projects have been identified and developed, but need funding to get off the ground.

The new UC Berkeley Air Travel Calculator helps you make a difference in the environment and support the sustainability of UC Berkeley. Use it every time you fly!

Why Use the Air Travel Calculator?

  • Make a big difference. Air travel accounts for 11 percent of our community's carbon emissions, so this is an opportunity to make a huge impact.
  • See the results. Funds support tangible, high-impact carbon-reduction projects right here at UC Berkeley.
  • It's tax-deductible. Unlike most "carbon offsets," your calculator-based donation to the UC Berkeley Climate Action Fund is tax-deductible.
