Why a Climate Action Fund? (website under construction)

In 2007, UC Berkeley completed its greenhouse gas Inventory, and Feasibility study/Climate Action Plan. As a result of this study, UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau committed to reducing UC Berkeley greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2014.   The plan identified a range of mitigation strategies available to UC Berkeley, including the projects’ emissions reduction potential, capital and operating expense, and discounted value of future investments needed to meet the campus target.

To implement this plan, the campus is pursuing two funding mechanisms.  One avenue is to set up a Capital Fund through the upcoming budget cycle.  This fund is designated for university investment, along with support from Pacific Gas and Electric, to improve campus energy efficiency and campus infrastructure.  The other avenue is to set up a Climate Action Fund to allow individual faculty, staff, students, alumni and others to make a financial contribution to fund projects not covered by the Capital Fund.  Many of these projects will be designed to encourage behavioral change, but particularly innovative infrastructure investments may also be considered.
