Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry Hiring!
With a grant from the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Sustainability, the Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry is seeking to hire a graduate student or advanced undergraduate to work on a project to:
- Conduct a pilot study of the cleaning products used on campus,
- Use a web-based database to assess the potential hazards of their ingredients, and
- Develop a user's guide to facilitate use of the database as a teaching tool.

Apply now for the fourth annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U), hosted by President Clinton at the University of California, San Diego from April 1-3, 2011! Guest Lecture on Sustainable Behaviors a Success
The Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Sustainability was proud to sponsor a lecture by Joan Walker, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Global Metropolitan Studies, on "Understanding and Influencing Sustainable Behaviors:
Promoting energy conservation, recycling, and alternative transportation." 70 people attended on October 20th to learn what drives people to behave in sustainable ways, what policies can be enacted to promote more sustainable behavior, and how we can determine what policies are most effective. TGIF Committee Student-at-Large Representative - The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) is looking for a Student At-Large to serve as a representative onthe 2010-2011 TGIF Committee. TGIF is a grant making fund for sustainability projects on the UC Berkeley campus. If you are interested, please send a completed application to tgif_info@berkeley.edu by Monday, November 1, 2010.
CACS Green Guide Intern - The intern will work to develop an interactive “green guide” for Campus staff and students to reference when implementing sustainable operations. The guide should be structured so that it is a living document which complements existing programs such as the Office of Sustainability Green Department Certification. The intern will be encouraged to incorporate social media and principles of promoting behavioral change. Please send a resume and cover letter to rander@berkeley.edu. CACS Sustainable Procurement Intern - The intern will help develop a pilot sustainable procurement program at the College of Environmental Design in collaboration with the Operational Excellence Procurement program. EPG and BERC Seminar: Potential Implications of Proposition 23
Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) Western Climate & Energy Program Manager, Erin Rogers will provide a briefing on the potential implications of Proposition 23 on the implementation of the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, and field questions from the audience. The seminar will take place Thursday, October 28th from 12:00-1:00PM in Goldman School of Public Policy West, Room 250. Note that light snacks and beverages will be provided for all who attend. Job Opportunity: I ♥ Tap Water Communications Intern
UC Berkeley’s I ♥ Tap Water campaign is hiring a communications intern for 2010-2011! This intern will help promote the drinkability and accessibility of tap water on Cal’s campus. Project work includes: creating an interactive Google map of tap water locations on campus; assisting with campaign and pledge promotion through events, tabling and social media; working with Health*Matters to promote tap water to campus departments. CACS Internship Funding Available-Proposals Due July 30th
CACS is currently soliciting proposals from campus members with sustainability projects in need of helping hands. Internships will be awarded (up to $2,500) to support UC Berkeley student internships. Funding must be used for labor only. Supervisor will not receive direct compensation for their work. Preference will be given to proposals that support the goals identified in the 2009 Campus Sustainability Plan or the goals of the Cal Climate Action Partnership (CalCAP).
Any UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and graduate and undergraduate student groups with proven experience supervising interns may submit a proposal Interns must be hired by October 1, 2010. Now Accepting Applications for the CACS Administrative Intern
We are now accepting applications for the Administrative Intern position. The Administrative Intern attends monthly CACS meetings and monthly CACS Executive Committee meetings and compiles minutes. The Intern is under the direct supervision of the CACS Co-Chairs, and additionally under the general direction of Facilities Services. Duties to be performed are critical to ensure the smooth operation of CACS throughout the year. A high level of organization and professionalism is expected at all times. The Berkeley Green Campus Program Energy Efficiency Paid Internship
The Berkeley Green Campus Program is now hiring for the position of program coordinator. Green Campus is a paid, student-run internship program focusing on energy efficiency projects on campus and in the residence halls. As an intern, you are given the exciting opportunities to 1) spread awareness and facilitate projects promoting energy efficiency, 2) interact with some of the best minds on the UC Berkeley campus, 3) attend business conferences with engineering, energy efficiency, and other sustainability professionals and other Green Campus interns from UC/CSU/CCC campuses from across the state, and 4) save the school money in the process. Chancellor's Green Fund Grants - DEADLINE EXTENDED TO WED. APRIL 7TH AT 5PM
The annual Chancellor's Green Fund Grant program enables members of the UC Berkeley campus community to undertake projects that will create a greener, more environmentally sustainable campus -- while saving resources and money in the process. A department, official campus organization, class, or group made up of a mix of students, staff and faculty of the University of California, Berkeley, may apply for grant funds of up to $2,000. Call for Pictures
CACS is putting together a slide show of pictures to be displayed at the 7th Annual Sustainability Summit and would love to have your pictures for the event! We are hoping for pictures of students, staff, and faculty making a positive change on campus while having fun.
The photographs will go through a selection process and will not be used outside of the Summit without your permission.
Please submit your photographs to Claire Evans or stop by the Office of Sustainability in room 203 of the A&E building to submit your photos on a thumb drive if they are too large to e-mail. Photographs are due Friday April 2, 2010.
Student Research on Bottled Water
Refill Revolution, a social enterprise started by two Haas grad students, rewards water bottle refills on a point-based system, is interested in how students use and feel about tap water and water fountains on campus. Please help by completing this quick 2-minute survey. You will earn a raffle ticket to win one of 15 Klean Kanteens AND a pizza party!
Refill Revolution is also looking for 10 undergraduate students (5 juniors and seniors, 5 freshman and sophomores) --who do not carry reusable water bottles -- to participate in a focus group about tap water and to record their beverage intakes (soda, water, etc.) in a beverage journal for a week. If you meet the above criteria and love free food (brownies and pizza), please send an email to elizabethchan@berkeley.edu. This project is supported by an internship through the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Sustainability.

To formally recognize contributions of those helping the campus to meet its sustainability goals, CACS annually provides awards to faculty, staff, and students that have done outstanding work. The campus community is indebted to the hard work of students, staff, and faculty making Berkeley a more sustainable place to work, live, and play. Nominations can be made for groups or individuals. You are invited to submit a poster to be part of the 7th Annual Sustainability Summit poster session, on Wednesday, April 21st 2010. The committee will select and print the top three posters from the campus community based on topic and design qualities. More information can be found here.

Green Campus is holding a poster design contest for Blackout Battles! Blackout Battles is an energy saving competition between the units in the residence halls. This competition takes place once per semester. We are currently accepting submissions for the spring semester design until January 22nd! Every year The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) grants $250,000 to campus projects which address sustainability, and we are now accepting applications for the 2010 grant cycle! Applicants are now required to submit a project abstract to the committee prior to submitting an application – visit http://tgif.berkeley.edu to download the guidelines for submission. Energy Efficient Refrigerator Pilot Program
Do you have an inefficient refrigerator in your department? Join in a campus-wide effort to reduce energy usage and costs! Participate in a pilot program where 100 refrigerators will be offered on a first come-first serve basis at a steep discount ($275 off/almost 50% discount). The campus has partnered with PG&E to offer this incentive, as part of our Strategic Energy Partnership. You can also sign up to be notified of future discounts or to give feedback on the program. Go to the Business Services website to express interest in the pilot program, learn more details and find out if your old refrigerator is eligible to participate. UC System Strengthens Sustainability Commitment
The University of California has expanded its sustainability policy, raising the bar on green building requirements and establishing one of the most comprehensive sustainable food service policies of any university in the country. The Policy on Sustainable Practices applies to all 10 UC campuses, the five UC medical centers and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Read the press release.

Sustainability Week at the Residence Halls – November 2-6
The Residential Sustainability Program (RSP) will be hosting events throughout the week to bring awareness to and shed light on some of today's most pressing environmental concerns caused by our consumer culture - like the use of millions of plastic water bottles and barely worn articles of clothing that end up in landfills. Release of the Sustainability Plan and the Sustainability Report
The Office of Sustainability has released two new documents that highlight our campus sustainability goals and accomplishments. Together, they set a standard of transparency and accountability by defining concrete and measurable goals and reporting progress toward those goals. The 2009 Campus Sustainability Plan defines a vision of long term sustainability and describes steps being taken in the areas of energy, climate, waste, water, food, green buildings, learning, and more. The Plan includes two new goals: to reduce commuters and campus fleet fuel usage to 25% below 1990 levels and increase sustainable food purchases by campus providers to at least 20%. The 2009 Campus Sustainability Report gives a sustainability snapshot of the campus' environmental impacts, achievements, and plans for the coming year. To read the actual documents, click here. Internship Position Available: ReUSE Online Materials Exchange Web Designer
ReUSE is creating an online materials exchange to foster reuse throughout the UC Berkeley community. Program Coordinator Needed (paid internship)- "Cal Habitat Restoration Student Leadership Program"
The Program Coordinator will support the efforts of the Strawberry Creek Restoration Program. The selected intern will recruit, schedule for training, and coordinate the activities of Student Habitat Restoration Leaders (SHRLs). Ideal candidates will have experience in leading or participating in habitat restoration efforts and knowledge of California flora and fauna; experience working in Bay Area watersheds a plus.
