The West Africa Development Project:
African people doing it themselves, for themselves
In diamond and mineral rich West Africa, the people live on less than $1
per day and the majority have no access to electricity or clean water.
Over the next year the West African Development Project will be
designing and constructing rainwater conservation systems, water
hygiene educational programs, and deploying a variety of alternative
energy systems (solar, wind and micro-hydro).

The West African Development Project is committed to solutions that:
* are affordable to set up and maintain
* meet the social, economic and cultural needs of the community
* are managed by the community
* will not deplete natural resources or create environmental problems.

West African Development Project

Aisha Fields is a physicist coordinating projects led by the
Uhuru Movement, working directly with communities in
West Africa to develop an electrical infrastructure and water
purification program based on models of environmental
sustainability. She holds a Ph.D. in Applied Optical Physics
from Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University.

Green Gathering III

Sustainable Berkeley invites you to attend Green Gathering III to celebrate our local sustainability leaders while enjoying good company, delicious snacks and lovely wine from local green caterers. The evening will feature the first ever Champions of Sustainability Awards and we are looking forward to honoring all of the nominees.

UC Berkeley Professor Dan Kammen, co-director of the Berkeley Institute of the Environment, will invigorate the evening with his thoughts on the Green Energy Revolution. Past Green Gatherings have attracted more than 150 business, community, government, and research leaders working to make Berkeley a model for combining economic vitality, environmental quality and social equity.

This year Green Gathering will be hosted by Sustainable Berkeley an exciting new collaborative fostering partnerships to accelerate sustainability in our community.

Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Fair to showcase sustainable products and services

As part of its effort to develop relationships with vendors with a strong commitment to sustainability, the campus will hold an Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Fair on Monday, Oct. 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Pauley Ballroom, Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union. The fair - sponsored by the Procurement Services and Strategic Sourcing Team - will be an opportunity for campus vendors to showcase their sustainable products and demonstrate their support of sustainability (including re-use and recycling). Participating suppliers include UC Printing Services, the CAL Overstock and Surplus Den, Disabled Veterans Enterprises, OfficeMax, Panasonic, Hewlett Packard, Xerox, Lanier, Steelcase/OneWorkplace, DHL, Fastenal, Arrowhead, FedEx, Ikon/Canon, Lenovo, Airgas, Praxair, Fisher Scientific, Sigma-Aldrich, Waxie, CleanSource, Grainger, and Hillyard.

Climate Change Fair Featuring "An Inconvenient Truth"

A few weeks from now the ASUC Sustainability team (STEAM), in conjunction with Berkeley's ASUC Superb, we willbe presenting the Climate Change Fair Featuring "An Inconvenient Truth."

The fair will take place Friday, November 3 at Wheeler Auditorium on the Berkeley Campus from 6pm - 11:30pm. In addition to the two screenings of the movie, there will be over 20 on and off campus organizations participating. The event will address four main issues concerning global warming: lifestyle, education, campus action, and political action. The groups will have educational materials, exciting interactive activities, demonstrations and even some free stuff!

We are looking forward to a really great fair and a really good time. We hope to see you all there. We would also like your help with advertising. linked below is the event flyer.
