UC Systems Adopts Pioneering Sustainability Policy
The University of California System recently announced the adoption of a pioneering Policy on Sustainable Practices. The new policy expands upon and replaces the System's Policy on Green Building Design, Clean Energy Standards, and Sustainable Transportation Practices, which among other things, committed the System to: designing all new buildings to minimum standard equivalent to the LEED Certified rating; procuring 20 percent of its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2010; and generating up to 10 megawatts of local renewable power by 2014. The new policy retains these commitments, and makes many new commitments, including: LEED requirements for building renovations; LEED-EB Certified equivalent standards for most existing buildings; a zero waste by 2020 goal with an interim target of achieving 75% waste diversion by 2012; a minimum standard of 30% post consumer recycled content paper for all office supplies; procurement of electronics registered as Bronze or higher under the Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT); and responsible disposal of electronics waste. In addition, the new policy incorporates the commitment to climate neutrality set out in the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, to which the University is a signatory. * Above summary from AASHE.
