Green Fund Grant Application 2008

Have a great idea how to make your campus more sustainable? Apply for the Chancellor's Green Fund Grant by March 31st. This grant enables members of the UC Berkeley campus community to undertake projects that will create a greener, more environmentally sustainable campus -- while saving resources and money in the process.

At the Annual UC Berkeley Sustainability Summit in April, the Green Fund provides one-time funding to projects led by students, faculty and staff which help move Cal toward environmental sustainability. This funding is given on a competitive basis, and many projects are proposed based on the opportunities identified in the 2005 Campus Sustainability Assessment.

Examples of projects funded in 2007 include creating sustainable practices in Wurster Hall's design studios, an electricity-efficient model at I-House, creating multi-compartment recycling receptacles for dorm rooms and many more.

Apply to make your campus more sustainable - applications are due March 31st.

Sustainability Award Nomination Application

The Chancellor's Advisory Committee wants to recognize the work done by individuals and groups of faculty, students, and staff on campus with a Sustainability Award. Awards will be presented at this year's Fifth Annual Sustainability Summit on Monday April 21st, 2008. Without their ingenuity and hard work, we would not be fortunate to have a multitude of sustainability programs on campus.

Applications are due April 4th, 2008. Please view the attached document for more information and the actual application. Direct your questions to Steve Maranzana, stevemar@berkeley.edu.

OUTREACH PRESENTATION

On January 24, 2008, Jennifer McDougall presented the versatile sustainability presentation the CACS Outreach Subcommittee created to discuss sustainability with various campus groups before the general committee. The presentation is called "A Citizen's Guide to Sustainability" and can be modified according to the audience it is shown to by adding or removing certain slides. The purpose of this presentation is to engage a wider UC Berkeley audience in sustainability issues by making it "portable" - easy to use and present, relate to, and modify. It will also let people know about CACS as an organization on campus.

Please look at this presentation (attached below) and email Jennifer McDougall (jmcdougall@cp.berkeley.edu), Steve Maranzana (stevemar@berkeley.edu), or Lisa Bauer (lmbauer@berkeley.edu) your comments, suggestions, and questions. CACS is grateful for all the hard work the subcommittee has put into this and hopes to approve and post the final presentations soon, so it can be utilized across campus.

8th Annual Brower Youth Awards - CACS member Rachel Barge

Please join us for an inspirational evening honoring bold young environmental leaders at our 8th Annual Brower Youth Awards - Wednesday, October 24th, at Herbst Theatre in San Francisco. U.C.-Berkeley undergraduate and CACS-member Rachel Barge, who helped lead a campaign to dramatically increase funding for sustainability projects at Cal, is among the winners of the 2007 Brower Youth Awards. The Awards Ceremony and Dessert Reception are free and open to all, with a special call out to young people.

Each year, after a competitive application process, the Brower Youth Awards are given to six environmental leaders ages 13 to 22 from North America. The winners each receive a $3,000 cash prize, are honored at a formal awards ceremony in San Francisco, and participate in skills-building and mentoring workshops geared toward furthering their leadership development. Past winners have launched their own environmental organizations—such as the campus climate coalition Energy Action—or found prominent positions in some of the country's largest environmental groups.
